%TMP% or %TEMP% in DOS/Windows?

[edit]

The WinAPI documentation for GetTempPathA() at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/api/FileAPI/nf-fileapi-gettemppatha suggests %TMP% is the default on Windows, but %TEMP% is used if the variable %TMP% is not defined.

Raymond Chen at Microsoft also gives some helpful historical information: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20150417-00/?p=44213, and confirms Windows's preference for %TMP%.

I think I have adequately responded to this by giving %TMP% equal billing and adding references, so I think I can remove the maintenance tag. --JWWalker (talk) 23:29, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
