The Calvert Journal is an online cultural magazine focused on contemporary culture, photography, travel and arts in Russia, Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Central Asia. The magazine was launched in March 2013. It is a project of the Calvert 22 Foundation.

About

The Calvert Journal was launched in 2013 with a Russia-only focus, broadening out to cover the 29 countries of the ‘New East’ region – the post-Soviet and post-socialist world – in 2015. The journal covers a wide area of culture, including fashion, film, tech, art, and books, and has a strong focus on photography. Several times a year, the magazine will release special reports, focused on anything from architectural photography to the life of LGBTQ people in Eastern Europe and the cultural relationship between the Soviet Union and the socialist countries of Africa.

The journal has built a reputation for showcasing new photography from Eastern Europe by publishing the work of internationally acclaimed photographers such as Alexander Gronsky, Rafal Milach, Caroline Drake and Max Avdeev. In platforming the visual culture of the New East, the journal played a pivotal role in bringing mainstream attention to the 'post-Soviet aesthetic’ in fashion, photography and style culture during the late 2010s.

The journal champions social causes, including women’s rights, LGBTQ, and sustainability, which it features across its daily reports as well as through special reports.

In 2016, The Calvert Journal, in collaboration with the Calvert 22 Foundation, launched the biannual New East Photo Prize, an award which supports emerging photographers from the New East.

New East Photo Prize

The New East Photo Prize is a biennial international award supporting emerging photographic talent from the 29 countries of the New East. It was launched in 2016 and offers a number of awards to its winners. In the past these prizes have included a travel grant, a cash prize, an exhibition, and a photo book among others.

  • Explanation of issue: The Calvert Journal is increasingly autonomous from Calvert 22 Foundation; it needs its own dedicated page so that it can be more detailed. It is also a fast-evolving organisation, whereas Calvert 22 Foundation will remain as it is: the Journal is more likely to expand as a project and organisation, and keep growing in notoriety, than the Foundation. The Calvert Journal has its own fast-growing social media (over 200,000 followers in total) and publishes new content daily (both on social media and on the website).
