Synopsis (from New York theater program note by Charles Wright)
“A love letter to the entertainment world of the 1930s... Set in a fictional New York landmark that sounds suspiciously like Rockefeller Center, the show takes place during the live broadcast of a variety program, “The Great Big Radio Show”. The customary tension in the broadcast studio is exacerbated by the disappearance of the show’s female star and the unexpected arrival of its eccentric sponsor. A handful of characters with period charm run around in farcical pandemonium. There’s a crusty producer, his wise-cracking secretary, an out-of work soprano with a violin case, and a pair of gangsters who believe the violin case contains a gun. What sets the seal of the 1930s on Radio Show, however, is Glassborow’s score, with its melodious echoes of Depression-era band and show music.”
