might the north south dichotomy also be relevantly discussed in Russia? I am not entirely certain of the extent of longitudinal/sociological relations but I did read in Suny's The Soviet Experiment that many Russian's didn't like Yeltsin (or it may have been Gorbachev) because of his Southern accent. Anyone with more info on the matter would be better suited to update the page.
