Vanity Girl by Compton Mackenzie

[edit]

This novel describes with great low key humour the progress of a vain young woman who succeeds from a stage career to an acceptable place amongst the nobility itself. Her character flaws are well delineated but with a gentle touch by the author. She finds, as we all do, the traps set by life and experience and learns the hard way. Enjoyable fiction but two small criticisms. Firstly very anti Semitic in the way a character is spoken of (unfortunately not uncommon views at the time) and also The protagonist's experiences of actually performing and learning to is woefully short of the details a reader would expect. That aside a very good read. 81.137.194.183 (talk) 19:05, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
