Contradiction

Proposed Major Rewrite

Hello Theatre of Canada watchers! I'm not sure whether to take the ten years of silence since that last silly comment as tacit agreement or the dismissal of something not worth responding to. I hope it's the latter. While I can appreciate that in one sense a lot of work has gone into this page, I'd like to suggest that it could benefit from a major structural overhaul, greater depth of topic coverage, and improved sourcing. I would be happy to produce a first draft of what I think that might look like, but I want to make sure that there is support from those who have been previously involved with the page before doing any major work. Some of the specific modifications I have in mind would be:

• Currently the article is mostly composed of lists: lists of people, lists of plays, and lists of theatre companies. There is already a very compendious List of Canadian plays broken down into three subpages, A-F, G-O, P-Z. I would recommend moving all of the plays not already on that list to that list and removing the lists from inside this article. Plays and playwrights of real notability that had an influence on Canadian theatre or culture could be referenced with citations in the article, but not as list items.
• Create a List of Canadian theatre companies article and move the lists from here to there. As with plays, companies that had a genuine impact on the theatre could be discussed with citations in the article.
• The current structure of a section for each decade is really arbitrary. I would propose breaking it down into still arbitrary, but more historically homogeneous chunks. I realize there could be a lot of talk about where those dividing lines should be, which would be great. This is the breakdown in (Canadian Theatre History. Playwrights Canada Press. 1996. ed. Don Rubin)(Headings are mine - his are more literary than encylopaedic)
  • The early years (1750 - 1916)
  • Beginings of a Canadian Theatre (1916-1929)
  • Workers theatre/little theatre etc. (1929-1945)
  • Regional theatres are establised (1945-1967)
  • Alternative theatre movements (1968 - 1995)
  • The new millenium (1995 - present)(my own addition)
• While there is a great deal of regional diversity, it would remain to be seen whether each region needed its own section within each time period, or whether after the time line sections there could be a section for each region talking about its historical significance.

Copyright violation

In this edit (20:18, 12 August 2013 UTC), several sentences are copied from this book review, and I think it was a copyright violation. I cut and changed the sentences. --saebou (talk) 14:54, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
