[edit]According to John Bryant in the introduction to the Penguin edition (1996) of "Typee,"Tommo IS NOT Toby Green. Toby is actually Richard Tobias Green, another of Melvilles' shipmates who later lived in Buffalo NY. Tommo is a fictional character based on the name of Melville's cousin, Thomas Melvill(NO "E" used by some other members of his family.
