Trunk on ships[edit]

I am reading a specification named S1000D specifying documentation and illustration rules for e.g. ships. There is a section about marking rules for trunks on/in ships. There seems not to be an article about this matter on wikipedia. As a non-english speaker I hoped to find an article. But from what I think I have found out so far a trunk in ships seem to be a vertical region comprising multiple decks and which is connected using manholes or hatches.
