[edit]

The Typhon system was attempted in the Early 1960s as a replacement for the early versions of Terrier, Talos, and Tartar. It was to have used an electrically scaned radar named AN/SPG-59. The Radar was to search and track like the later AN/SPY-1 used by the Aegis combat system.

The project was canceled in 1963 when it had become mired in technical problems. --Two way time (talk) 04:14, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Typhon Combat System added

[edit]

The Typhon system was an attempt at an air defense system similar to the later Aegis combat system that entered service in the early 1980s. The system was canceled in 1963 because of mounting technical problems and a tight budget. I am trying to round up enough information to flesh out the article and any help will be more than welcomed. There is an article on the AN/SPG-59 radar could possibly be merged with this one. The system never was operational and only one AN/SPG-59 was built. Other elements include the two missiles that were to be used by the system the RIM-50 Typhon long range missile, and the RIM-55 Typhon medium range missile. The Typhon missiles were the basis of the later RIM-66 Standard medium range missile, and the RIM-67 Standard extended range missile.--Two way time (talk) 04:39, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
