Literature Connection[edit]

Kenneth Dodson, author of "Away All Boats" (1954) and a former merchant master, was assigned as a Navy Lieutenant to USS Pierce in spring of 1943. He served as boat-group commander, navigator, and executive officer, taking part in landings "...from the Gilberts (Tarawa and Makin) to Okinawa -- nine major Pacific assaults in all."*
