I'm not sure whether this ISP merits its own page. Its notability seems to come solely from the fact that it became part of RCN. I'm suggesting the same merge for Erol's Internet. Tkrpata 19:46, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's RCN that has no 'notability'. RCN took a profitable business with brilliant employees with promising careers and flushed it all down the toilet with it's mismanagement and poor business ideas. RCN's only goal in teh purchase of UNET, EROLs, JNET and Interport was to give them an internet customer base on the east coast. UltraNet was instrumental in providing local dial-up internet to Boston suburbs, Providence and rural NH. In addition UltraNet had an agreement with UNH and Nashua public schools to provide high speed internet to the schools and discounted dial-up to the students. UltraNet also provided extensive high speed solutions to businesses including the MA Realtors Assn with a VPN solution over ISDN. They employed brilliant minds from Digital Corporation (DEC), one of them instrumental in the invention of the token ring network methology of computer communication.

RCN's first order of business was to discontinue selling high speed business services. Many customers were disconnected with too little notice for them to secure leased lines elsewhere. Since most of RCN's engineering and sales staff serviced those customers, they were some of the first to get farmed out. RCN then replaced their existing dial-up network with leased lines from Worldcom. Gone were the engineering staff that maintained the legacy dialup. Customer service was moved shortly thereafter and then what was UltraNet was gone forever.

I think defunct Internet companies deserve their own spot so someday when we are all wearing VR gear connected to the big 'link', we can examine where we came from and when we wanted to get someone's 'away message', we 'finger'ed their account :) --Hamptonbeach (talk) 18:52, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
