History

[edit]

Corfinio, built on the ancient site of Corfinium, lies strategically between the Peligna Valley and the Fucino Plain.[1][2]

By the first century, allies in central and southern Italy had fought side by side with Rome for two centuries, and had grown restless under autocratic rule, wanting instead Roman citizenship and the privileges it conferred. [3] In 91 BC the Roman tribune Marcus Livius Drusus, in an attempt to solve the problem, proposed legislation that would have granted all Italians citizenship. His plan met with heated opposition in the Senate, and soon thereafter Drusus was assassinated. Frustrated, the Italian allies rose in revolt, known as the Social War.[4] To punish the rebellion, the Romans destroyed the town and renamed it Pentima; Latin for the Worst. Two thousand years later, in 1928, Pentima resumed its original name, Corfinio.[5] Lakemcdougall (talk) 04:27, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
