Correct usage of the word "carat" vs. "karat"[edit]

I believe the correct word for gold is Karat, not carat. As a jeweler, I experience the difference, daily. Even though Karat and Carat have the same origins, the common usage for Carat today is a term used in the measurement of gemstones. Karat is employed when discussing the purity of gold. The related link: "carat" I think, should also be changed to Karat. Is there any reason that the author chose the word carat to be interchangeable with karat? Any ideas? Thanks. Current standards[edit]

I'm not sure, but don't current standards say that vermeil has to be 22k now? Or is that just the most common form? I couldn't find information on this. Thanks. Saleah 18:10, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, the US Federal Trade Commission defines vermeil as the following:

(b) An industry product may be described or marked as "vermeil" if it consists of a base of sterling silver coated or plated on all significant surfaces with gold, or gold alloy of not less than 10 karat fineness, that is of substantial thickness7 and a minimum thickness throughout equivalent to two and one half (2 1/2) microns (or approximately 100/1,000,000ths of an inch) of fine gold.

I'm just wondering about the sources of this article, particularly given the query about the very specific figures given, and the IPA pronunciation, as those diphthongs look odd and I'm not sure what the circumflex on the [u] represents (perhaps my computer is mangling a combining diacritical?). 79.68.202.189 (talk) 07:27, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vermeil vs Silver-gilt[edit]

There now is a page on Silver-gilt here... it seems that either it or this one is one too many on the subject. I don't have the technical expertise to effect a redirect and am not sure I have the requisite knowledge to properly merge the contents of this page into the Silver-gilt one, but I have an idea this would be the best course.
