de Witte
[edit]I recently met a 98 year old man (here in Canada) who tells me that he was a member of "de Witte Paard", but they soon became known just as "de Witte"He was working in France for a Dutch Jew named Masslink, who reconditioned aircraft for use by the French Air Force. They were told that the planes were for use by the French in Africa, but then they learned that they were actually going to be going to the Germans. Because my friend could speak three languages (Belgian, French and Dutch) he was valuable for getting information. One time he went to the rear of the airfield to count the airplanes. "Who is there?" someone shouted, and shot him. He was injured, and he lost his thumb. The Dutch Jew Maaselink had been in the south of France, likely in the safe area near Nice, which was held by the Italians. He was sent back to the Netherlands, but was not heard from again. My friend received a number of ribbons, but the one that was meaningful to him was the one that was given by the Belgian Prince Albert, who said "this is not from the government, this is from me personally". He still has that ribbon. VictoriaDakini (talk) 05:33, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
