Reviewer: WonderBoy1998 (talk · contribs) 12:58, 26 January 2014 (UTC) I'll be reviewing this article. Hopefully it doesn't take time! Since I don't really like Cyrus, you have the guaranty that this review won't be biased :P --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 12:58, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
  • Two links need updating (here)
 Done
  • All files have rationales

Background

[edit]
  • Please link EP, in fact I'd suggest writing it out in full
 Done
  • Ref 2 - "Miley Cyrus Leaves Hollywood Records And Signs A Deal With RCA Records". Disney Dreaming. January 31, 2013. Retrieved August 25, 2013. - Can you find a better source than Disney Dreaming? There's a Billboard article on this.
 Done
  • You don't need the Twitter source when Digital Spy has already quoted the tweet.
 Done
  • "Beyonce song now becoming a Miley Cyrus song?!! Good/bad? I don't know??!!!!" - Needs the {{sic}} template
 Done
 Done
  • " The song itself was" - I don't think the "itself" is needed
 Done
  • If you can find a better source than MusicTimes
 Done

Compo

[edit]
  • I suggest adding the words "According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Kobalt Music Publishing America," before the sheet music sentence. It can add some meat to the section, because right now it looks awkward.
Done; I merged the section with "Background" so it makes for one fuller section. If you're not a fan of this layout feel free to restore the original.
  • "[starts] with a spare keyboard rhythm before Cyrus' anguished vocals take off soaring above it" - I think this can easily be paraphrased. The article seems a little too quote-laden to me
 Done
  • "The track has been widely speculated to have been inspired by Cyrus' former fiancé Liam Hemsworth" Consider changing to "The track has been widely speculated to be directed towards Cyrus' former fiancé Liam Hemsworth", or something similar
 Done

Critical reception

[edit]
  • "the heartbreak section of Bangerz mostly repays your attention", which she considered "Wrecking Ball" to be included in" Consider chaning this to "the heartbreak section of Bangerz mostly repays your attention" and mentioned "Wrecking Ball" to be a part of it"
 Done
  • I think you should paraphrase some quotes too, for example after studying the PopMatters review, I would have framed the sentence as-

"Although he found the song "predictable," Evan Sawdey of PopMatters gave it an overall positive review and complimented its production and the build up to its chorus, calling it "the kind of broad mainstream song that shows how you how to properly build up to a chorus before hitting us over the head with it."

 Done
  • ""Cyrus' singing throbs with what feels like an embarrassment of emotion — even to someone who couldn't care less about the status of her real-life relationship with "Hunger Games" hunk Liam Hemsworth."" - The quote can be stopped till "emotion" and the Hemsworth part can be paraphrased, for example - "Mikael Wood of Los Angeles Times felt that the track proved that Cyrus "isn't just a twerk-bot programmed to titillate", but suggested that "Cyrus' singing throbs with what feels like an embarrassment of emotion" and found it unusual that the singer discussed her relationship with Hemsworth when she "couldn't care less about" it, commenting on her public behaviour." Or something similar.
 Done
  • The Slant Magazine source doesn't mention anything related to "Wrecking Ball". I did some digging, an the "it's all very familiar-sounding-and-feeling" was written in the Spin review.
minus Removed
  • There's also a Digital Spy and Inquirer.net to add some content. I just suggest adding them, it is not that necessary, but will help adding some different opinions.
Done; the more the merrier! Thanks so much for finding these!
You're welcome. By the way, I think you should remove the "In a more mixed review," part in the beginning of the LA Times review. It can be place before the Inquirer one since the mixed reviews begin from there.
 Done

Commercial performance

[edit]
  • "Before officially being serviced as a single, "Wrecking Ball" debuted at number 50 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with 90,000 two-day downloads,[19] and reached number 14 the following week with 201,000 downloads.[20] In its fourth week, the track peaked at number one in the United States, heavily assisted by online streaming credits from its recently released music video, giving Cyrus her first number-one single in the country. " - This makes it seem as though it climbed atop the chart as a non single. I suggest adding a break mentioning something like "Following its release as a single blah blah blah"
 Done
  • Triple platinum in Canada na?
 Done
  • Ref 27 -^ Jump up to: a b "Certificaciones –" (in Spanish). Asociación Mexicana de Productores de Fonogramas y Videogramas. Retrieved January 18, 2014. - Why not provide a direct link to the certification of "Wrecking Ball" instead of the albums. Here it is
Done; taken care of in the certifications table, as well.
The link in the table is the specific one, but in the Commercial p section it points to the albums still --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 19:28, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like I messed up with the formatting the first time around. It should be working correctly now.
  • "In the United Kingdom, the song and Bangerz both debuted at number one on their respective charts, making Cyrus the first artist of 2013 to achieve a "chart double" in the country,[28] and was later certified silver by the Official Charts Company" Split the certification information
 Done
By the way the Official Charts Company does not certify records. The British Phonographic Industry does --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 19:28, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
 Done
  • You must mention that they debuted atop the chart in the same week, because that is what makes the feat special
 Done
  • Source says that it peaked at number two in Australia
 Done
  • The RIANZ source doesn't open up for me, does it for you?
Done; taken care of in the certifications table, as well.
Na na na, still not opening for me. Why don't you just use this link? --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 19:28, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh jeez, those New Zealand charts are always causing problems! Thanks for the archive.

Music video

[edit]
  • "With 19.3 million views in the first twenty-four hours of its release, the clip holds the record for having the most views in that time-frame across Vevo platforms.[39] After reaching 100 million views in six days, it also set the record for being the fastest music video to attain a Vevo certification. In doing so, Cyrus beat the previous record of thirty-seven days, established by her music video for "We Can't Stop"." - More related to Reception than Synposis. Suggest moving it
  • "if she "finally gone too far this time"" - Sounds too gangster
Done; Hahaha, what missing one verb can do to a sentence!
  • " "scandalized/titillated/disappointed in Billy Ray Cyrus' parenting skills" after seeing his daughter nude and "fellating a sledgehammer." - Definitely needs a [sic] template
 Done
  • "from her Hannah Montana image" - Needs a little more explanation, as to what her image was like. Also, some readers might like a little piece of info regarding what HM is/was (definitely was)
 Done
  • "Andrew Sims of Hypable questioned Cyrus' choice to "[sexualize] the emotional, serious message as much as possible"" You can remove "questioned" and add some paraphrased information like "Andrew Sims of Hypable felt that the visuals depicted in the video were too sexual and did not relate to the "emotional, serious message" of the song itself." By the way, is Hypable even notable?
Done, and it seemed to offer a common criticism of the video, but I can remove the site if you'd like.
  • Does "salacious scenes" need italicising?
That's the way that MTV styled the text, although I can remove it if you'd prefer it that way.
It's fine I believe
  • Cyrus' quote seems to be more of a defence of the concept rather than a description. I suggest changing "Cyrus describing the concept of the music video" to "Cyrus, in defence of the concept of the music video"
 Done

Live

[edit]
  • " the performance was considered to be "fairly tame considering the VMAs" - One might not be able to understand why this was mentioned if no background info regarding the coverage of her performance at the VMAs is included.
 Done
  • "which gained acclaim from music critics"- Just because she did not get into any controversy doesn't mean she garnered acclaim. If she did, include more sources that directly address her delivery of the performance rather than her wardrobe.
 Done
  • It seems she performed "We Can't Stop" at Jimmy Fallon not "Wrecking Ball"
She did perform "Wrecking Ball" too, although I replaced the old source with one that makes sure it mentions "Wrecking Ball".
  • Ref 61 - ^ "Miley Cyrus Performs ‘Wrecking Ball’ on ‘Wetten, Dass..?’". Rap-Up. Retrieved November 16, 2013. - Can link Rap-Up
  • "January 29, 2014;[67] She performed an acoustic version" - Should "She" be in proper case?
 Done

Covers

[edit]
  • Are you sure? I opened both links and they worked fine for me.
Oh my bad! I meant ref 72 and 74. both open to Mashable --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 15:56, 12 February 2014 (UTC) I didn't want to wait so I replaced the link myself --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 17:59, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Charts and certifications

[edit]
  • As it is taking me too much time to complete the review because I rarely have time nowadays, will you please go through the chart sources again verifying the positions? I trust you will do this with complete honesty :) Although it is not the best decision for a reviewer to ask a nominator to do so, I trust you
Done, don't worry, I went back and checked them all/adjusted a couple.
I added the Switzerland certification, but on the other Ultratop sites I couldn't for the life of me find if/where they list certifications. How did you find the Swiss certification?
You can search for certifications on the Swiss chart page, using this link --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 15:54, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I went through all certification pages. These are the certifications that need listing -
  1. Gold in Austria.
  2. Platinum in Italy.
  3. Triple platinum in Sweden (Find Wrecking Ball on the VECKANS SINGELLISTA page (it will be 35th or something), click on VISA --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 16:55, 12 February 2014 (UTC) Note- I did't want to wait so I added them myself. But please do a better and more thorough search next time --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 17:59, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@WonderBoy1998: Oh I'm so sorry, I must have misunderstood your original comment. For some reason I thought you meant that Ultratop had a feature that listed certifications in each country, and when the link you provided was the only one that did that I had no idea where to find it on the other versions. Thanks for adding the certifications!

Releases and lead

[edit]
  • No problems with release history section.
In the lead-
  • Their is some sort of mixed commentary too. Hence I suggest including some of such reviews too in the critical review, for example "critics praised its xyz, although some criticised its xyz" or something similar
 Done
  • "The track charted at number 18" - Use a word other than "charted" since Year-end lists are basically compilations. Perhaps something like "appeared" or "was the eighteenth best selling.." Also why is it "charts" and not "chart"
 Done
  • Reception quite honestly seems to be negative to mixed for the music video. Indeed, I can't see any review which implies "some appreciated its diversity from Cyrus' previous single "We Can't Stop""
 Done
