Tallentire is a village in West Cumbria about 4 km north of Cockermouth. It is also a reasonably uncommon English surname. Tallentire means "land (or world)'s end" in old Cumbrian.[citation needed] The Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names describes the name as Cornish.
