Ancient period
Traditionally, all the royal clans of India used to claim their origin from one of the ancient & mythical Solar, Lunar, Fire or Snake Kshatriya races. The Cholas claimed descend from the Solar race and the Pandyas from Lunar. Pallavas claimed a Brahminical origin, from Bharadwaja gotra, and the same is suggested for the Cheras, for whom few inscriptions about their genealogy are available, as they were matrilineal.. Many of the kings in these dynasties took the title varman which is prescribed for Kshatriyas in Manu Smriti. Rajaraja's ( a Chola king) epithets bear one of his titles, Kshatriya Shikhamani ( English : Crest jewel of the Kshatriyas). These kings also conducted ancient Vedic sacrifices like Rajasuya, Tulapurushaand and Ashvamedha, the latter is a sacrifice that can only be conducted by a Sarvabhauma Sovereign.
