You may also appeal directly to me (on my talk page), before or instead of appealing to the noticeboard. Even if you appeal this sanction, you remain bound by it until you are notified by an uninvolved administrator that the appeal has been successful. This template is a convenient, standardised method of notifying an editor that they have had contentious topic restrictions or arbitration sanction(s) imposed on them. Only uninvolved administrators may sanction another editor under the terms of an arbitration policy, and sanctions must be given in accordance with the procedure at Wikipedia:Contentious topics or a specific arbitration case.
The template requires three parameters:

You don't have to declare the parameter names – only their values – but you can if you so wish (and may have to, if supplying tricky values):

This template provides its own level-2 heading so no subject should be entered, this can be turned off with |heading=no. The template must always be substituted. Your signature is automatically included. You can prevent your signature from being automatically included with |sig=no
The "decision code" is one of the same decision codes used in the other standardised Arbitration Enforcement templates:
Note that the ap and tpm topic codes are interchangeable. tpm is preferred.
