Usage details
[edit]- name defaults to article title if omitted.
- All other parameters are optional and will be ignored if left blank
- The deprecated template {{Infobox horse}} redirects here for backwards compatibility. Please use this template for new articles.
- If you want to specify multiple entries for the altname parameter, these must be listed using {{unbulleted list}}; please don't use
<br>
. - The comments at the beginning and end don't affect the appearance of the table but please include them to help newcomers understand what's going on when they edit the page.
- Try to be sure all infobox parameters are sourced in the article body text or cited in the infobox itself.
Infobox variables
[edit]- name: Breed name as in article title.
- image: The name of the image (leave off File:)
- Use the best breed photo available for the infobox image; the ideal is a full body image of a well-conformed animal that has proper breed phenotype, facing left "into" the article. However, even a relatively poor quality image is acceptable if it adequately conveys the breed character.
- image_caption: A caption that describes the image.
- altname: Other names by which the breed is known by English speakers. Common nicknames can be included
- country: Country or countries of origin, preferably at time of origin to avoid squabbling over current political boundaries.
- color or colour: Only use if an important breed characteristic; main description should be in article body text
- height: Use either the general height parameters OR the split male/female height parameters, not both. Only use male/female parameters when sexual dimorphism is sourced, either as a breed standard or by other reliable studies. Data may be provided as a range or as an average.
- WP:LOCALCONSENSUS of WikiProject Equine is to generally use the {{hands}} conversion template or, where the nation of origin measures the breed in metric units, {{convert}} may be used as in this example: {{convert|148|to|152|cm|hand in|2}}. However, if there is no reliable source for a measurement in hands, omission of the template may occur on a case by case basis.
- weight: Use either the general weight parameters OR the split male/female weight parameters, not both. Only use male/female parameters when sexual dimorphism is sourced, either as a breed standard or by other reliable studies. Data may be provided as a range or as an average.
- status: Generally leave blank or omit unless there is a specific breed conservation status of concern (such as "endangered" or "critical")
- extinct: Only use if breed is extinct, otherwise leave blank or omit
- Breed standards:
- Up to 6 different groups (organizations) and their standards can be specified; both variables (group1 and std1) for each group are required if any are used at all.

Microformats
[edit]This template emits a "species" (or "biota") microformat.
The microformat is created by the use of class="biota"
, and classes for individual taxonomic ranks, such as class="domain"
in a span around {{{domain}}} (full list). Please do not change or remove those classes other than as part of development of the microformat. For background information, see microformats on Wikipedia and the microformat specification.
