Please create a pagenotice with the text below, which is taken verbatim (except for markup) from a comment which is currently at the top of the page, where it is somewhat useless as people mostly edit sections.

This is not a general list of fictional books. It is a list of fictional books from notable works, specifically those where said fictional books have some importance to the setting. As such, authors or books which do not already have a Wikipedia page almost certainly are not notable enough to be listed here. In fact, many lesser books that do have Wikipedia articles probably shouldn't have their fictional works here either. Please don't add in more fictional books from lesser sources, as the inherited notability is likely to be too small.

Is this really an issue? I don't see this as currently a problem, at least from the page's edit history. Also, I don't see the source of the comment you quote. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 05:23, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's enough of an issue that someone created an informal editnotice (you can see it by going to List of fictional books and pressing [Edit]). Not enough to semiprotect, but presumably editnotices are cheap and not terribly intrusive, and better to have a real one which might be effective than what there is now. This is a solution in search of a problem. The message was added almost two years ago, and it seems to have done the trick. Editnotices aren't any more official than invisible comments, and can sometimes be off-putting to editors. As you noted, they certainly look more formal, so normally should be used only where some problem currently exists. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 03:29, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
