As per commons:Emoji, could you please add the Android (4.1-4.3) emoji, EmojiOne 1 and EmojiOne BW, because right now each attempt will make it fallback to EmojiOne 2.2.4 emoji or should I respect WP:BOLD and do it myself ? Because this is a template I will want to edit 86.22.8.235 (talk) 19:49, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2 hours without response but did respect WP:BOLD and did this myself, testing the links on the doc opage and tested via sandbox to see if the new insertions worked and they did 86.22.8.235 (talk) 21:04, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can/should this somehow be changed to support missing emojis?

[edit]

If you use this template to link to an emoji that is unsupported in the theme that you specify, you get a broken file link. In many or most cases that seems appropriate, but in the case of emojis, it might instead be better to just use the actual unicode character. In fact, that's what this template's source code seems to be trying to do (via the img tag's "alt" attribute). But in the case of a missing image, some MediaWiki and/or Wikipedia magic makes there not even be an img tag in the first place; instead, it makes a link to the Special:Upload page for the missing image.

For example, here's the "do_not_litter" emoji in the "noto" theme: 🚯

But the same emoji is apparently not supported in the "android" theme, and instead of falling back to the actual unicode character, you just get: 🚯

If you look at the actual HTML that's generated, in the noto case, there's an img tag with an appropriate alt attribute, but in the android case there's an href to Special:Upload.
