The original Template:Subnational entity does not categorize by meaning. It's just organized by name there. I think categorizing might be difficult? Tobias Conradi (Talk) 03:55, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

- some examples: why is "distrito federal" national and not federal? The federal stuff alltogether seems not right for every country. Some countries are no unions/federations but have cantons/provincias/departments. The ex-distrito federal in AR (now Autonomous city of BsAs) is very urban and metropolitan (?).
