The Giant Plane
The Giant - this is a London plane tree, located in the city Chojna, Poland. It is one of the thickest trees in this country.[1]
Name of the tree in Polish – Olbrzym – means very large, huge thing (even a person).[2]
The Giant is about 300 years old, according to the dendrochronological research,[3] and once stood in the Viereck'scher Garten. It is monumental, 35-metre[4] tall tree with a circumference of the trunk - 1066 cm (in 2014, at the tightest place - 0.45m height).[4][5] Its circumference at the breast height (CBH) is 11m (in 2015).[6]
This plane has large, probably multistemmed, ellipsoid-shaped trunk. It forks at the height of 2.5 and 5m metres, creating large crown.[1][4]
The tree nowadays is preserved by local government, because earlier it was set on fire a few times.[7] From 2011 there is a fence around tree and latticework, to protect The Giant from birds and insects.[7]
In 2012 specimen was among the best trees in the competition of the tree of the year in Poland.[8]
This is 3rd thickest tree in Poland, also the largest and oldest London plane.[1]
