The Love Invention is the upcoming debut studio album by British singer and musician Alison Goldfrapp. It is expected to be released on 12 May 2023 as her first full-length project under her own name, away from her efforts as part of the successful synth music duo Goldfrapp. The album is supported by its two collaborative efforts "Digging Deeper" and "Fever", with Claptone and Paul Woolford respectively, as well as Alison's first solo single "So Hard So Hot".
Background and promotion
After Goldfrapp's release of their 2017 album Silver Eye, Alison and Will Gregory remained relatively quiet on the music front. Towards the end of 2019, the band were to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut album Felt Mountain by going on the Felt Mountain: The 20th Year Tour in March and April 2020[1] with so much demand that they even added an extra London date at the Royal Albert Hall.[2] However, due to the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the tour was forced to be postponed[3] and ended up getting rescheduled to 2022.[4]
During the pandemic, Alison used the time to be creative and started working on music herself. She revealed in an interview with DIY, "lockdown forced me to think a bit more independently, in a way that I don't think I have done for a very, very long time - since I was probably in my 20s." In 2022, she appeared for the first time using her own name in new music on the single "Impossible" with Norewgian duo Röyksopp.[5] The song, as well as their second collaboration "The Night", contributed to Royksopp's 2022 album trilogy Profound Mysteries. When speaking about the songs, she said that she was "a fan of [Röyksopp's] for a long time". During the same interview, she was also asked about new music from Goldfrapp, to which she responded, "Will and I don't have any plans to release anything as yet".[6]
Singles
In March 2023, she released the first official single from the album "So Hard So Hot"[7]
Two promotional singles were released prior to "So Hard So Hot": "Digging Deeper", in collaboration with German duo Claptone, was released on 19 January. A press release from Alison's team stated that it was to be first taste of “what is to come this year from an iconic music tour de force”, meaning that more new music is on the horizon.[8] "Fever" with Paul Woolford, was released the following month.[9] The two songs were later revealed by Alison as "collaborative remixes" of original songs that were to be included on her debut album. The album itself was announced to have been worked on by producers Richard X and James Greenwood, the former having previously contributed to Goldfrapp's 2010 album Head First.
