The Pet Network was a Canadian English language Category B specialty channel owned by Stornoway Communications. The Pet Network broadcast entertainment and information programming featuring pets in the form of films, documentaries, and dramas.
History
In November 2000, a joint venture between Stornoway Communications and Cogeco were granted approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to launch a television channel called The Pet Network, described as "a national English-language Category 2 specialty television service devoted to pets and working animals."[1]
Prior to the channel's launch, in January 2004, the CRTC approved an application that would see Stornoway acquire Cogeco's interest in the proposed service.[2]
The channel was launched on December 3, 2004 on Rogers Digital Cable.[3]
On October 20, 2010, The Pet Network was launched on Shaw Cable, giving the channel widespread distribution in Western Canada for the first time.[4] On November 2010, Shaw Direct added the channel to its lineup, giving the channel national distribution.[4]
On November 12, 2012, to coincide with the launch of the channel's 2012-2013 fall programming launch, The Pet Network underwent a rebranding including of a new logo, on-air graphics, and website.[5]
In early April 2016, it was revealed through several television service providers, via their respective websites and other communications, that The Pet Network would be ceasing operations on May 2, 2016. Stornoway Communications has yet to reveal reasons for the shuttering operations.
The Pet Network was taken off the air on May 2, 2016 and anyone who still had the channel on Rogers, would see the only shows titled as, "Off the air" with the message shown after each show as of early April and played the rest of the music.
