The Return of Jezebel James is an upcoming American situation comedy created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who also executive produces alongside her husband, Daniel Palladino. The pilot was also directed by Sherman-Palladino. The series stars Parker Posey as a successful children's book editor who, unable to have children, asks her estranged younger sister (Lauren Ambrose) to carry her baby.[1]

Produced by Regency Television and Dorothy Parker Drank Here Productions, the series is currently scheduled to air on Friday nights at 8:30/7:30c on FOX as a mid-season replacement starting March 14 2008, following 'Til Death.[2]

The show was given 13 episodes in May 2007, but in October 2007 the show was cut to just 7 episodes in anticipation of the pending writers strike. [1]

Plot

"Can two estranged sisters, polar opposites, live together when one agrees to carry the other's baby? SARAH THOMKINS is a bright, optimistic, determined woman who seems to have it all a great job as a children's book editor, an eager-to-please assistant, BUDDY, who helps keep her life together, and a no-strings-attached personal relationship with successful businessman MARCUS SONTI. Nevertheless, as her father, RONALD, is constantly pointing out, something is missing from Sarah's life. Her hard work may garner accolades, but when she goes home at night, she is very much alone. All too aware that she isn't getting any younger, Sarah decides to have a baby on her own and gets the shock of her life when the doctor tells her she can't get pregnant because she has Asherman's syndrome (also known as intrauterine adhesions). Having no concept of the term "can't," Sarah wills herself to execute a plan. With nowhere else to turn, Sarah sets up a meeting with her quirky younger sister, COCO, and proposes a plan for Coco to carry her baby. They haven't seen each other in a while, and Coco refuses to go along with such a huge favor. But something happens when Sarah mentions that she's turned Coco's imaginary childhood friend, Jezebel James, into a children's book. Even though she doesn't say so out loud, Coco is clearly touched, and, realizing that her current living situation sharing a couch with her friend's sick dog isn't working out, Coco decides that this just might be worth a try."[1]

Production

The series came into fruition when FOX gave it a put pilot commitment in July 2006.[3] It entered production and was named "The Return of Jezebel James" in December 2006[4] before casting began in January 2007 when Scott Cohen was the first to be cast in the regular role of Marcus Sonti.[5] In February 2007, Golden Globe-nominated "indie queen" Parker Posey was cast in the lead role, making it her first regular television role in her 15-year acting career.[6] Casting continued throughout March 2007 with Emmy Award-nominee Lauren Ambrose, Michael Arden, Ron McLarty and Tony Award-nominee Dana Ivey all landing roles in the series.[7][8][9] The series was greenlit and given a thirteen-episode order on May 11, 2007.[10] In October 2007 the number of episodes was cut from 13 to just 7.
