Plot
On Halloween night two friends, Shelby and Becca, create a homemade Ouija-board, called a Spirit Box. During the game, they receive a message from deceased classmate Emily, who had committed suicide a few years before. The message says she was actually murdered. Both girls start looking into her death, attempting to find overlooked clues. Shelby steals the investigation file on Emily’s death and reads how Emily was drugged before she died. Shelby and Becca attempt to contact Emily several more times. Eventually they get a message with their gym teacher’s name. They believe he is her killer. Shelby breaks into his house and finds the drugs found in Emily’s body. Moments later, the teacher arrives home. He finds Shelby, who subtly flirts with him. He gives in and just as he reaches out for her, he is shot by a taser. He falls down his stairs, breaking his neck. Becca announces that she called the police and quietly watches as her teacher dies.
A month later, Shelby visits Emily’s grave and discovers the nameplate on the tombstone is fake and is covering someone else’s name. She calls Becca, who now lives in Taiwan, eager to tell her friend. Becca remains unfazed and quietly mentions she remembered that Emily was actually cremated. It suddenly dawns on Shelby that Becca had been behind everything, from the Oujia-board messages, to the drugs in the teacher’s house, even Emily’s death. Becca denies the appearances of Emily's ghost, claiming it was just Shelby’s imagination.
Shelby questions why Becca did all this, and a flashback shows Becca witnessing the gym teacher flirting with Emily. She is jealous of Emily and declares he was hers first. In the present, Becca goes out to the garage and starts her car. The garage door becomes stuck and the car doors lock, trapping Becca in her vehicle. The engine starts, pumping fumes into the garage and car, slowly choking Becca to death. She turns to find Emily’s ghost snarling at her. Becca dies as the fumes envelop her, Emily’s ghost closing in.
