From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Comission for the History and Theory of Historiography (ICHTH) is a non-profit organization affiliated with the International Committee of Historical Sciences (ICHS).Founded in 1980 during the 15th International Congress of the Historical Sciences, the ICHTH aims to promote the research and study of the history and theory of historiography throughout the world. It was originally called the International Commission for the History of Historiography (ICHH), and changed to its current name in 1995, during a meeting in Montreal, to better reflect its two main fields of interest: the history of historiography and the theory of historiography. The committee is composed of historians, historical theorists, and other experts in related fields, who work together to promote research and the exchange of ideas on the history of historiography. [1]

Purpose

[edit]

The ICHTH aims to promote the study of history theory, the history of historiography, the philosophy of history, historical methodology and historical culture. It encourages debates and exchanges between different approaches to these topics, and stresses non-discrimination on the basis of ethnic origin, gender, race, religion or sexual orientation in its activities. In order to realize these objectives, the Commission has among its means the objective of creating and coordinating an international network of researchers and working together with international or national organizations and bodies that promote the discussion of the themes present in these objectives.[2]

The ICHTH also emphasizes the effort to combat regional and/or ethnocentric assumptions, in order to reflect the diversity of theoretical perspectives in the field In this way, the Commission intends to establish constant links among researchers, holding workshops and events, in addition to maintaining dialogue with specialized journals and academic institutions linked to the subject of the history of historiography and the theory of history.[2]

Journals

[edit]

The ICHTH holds international conferences and symposia, publishes an academic journal, and maintains a website that provides information about its activities and publications. The committee also works to promote cooperation among historians and historical theorists around the world, encouraging the exchange of ideas and collaboration on research projects. The journal Storia della Storiografia was established in 1982 as a journal of the ICHTH and is published in four languages, edited initially by Bianca Valota Cavallotti and later by Edoardo Tortarolo and Guido Abbatista, in collaboration with Georg Iggers (1926-2017). Many of its collaborators being members of the commission, however, over the years it became more autonomous and independent, moving away from the institution. Recently, it has reapproached and is moving towards closer collaboration with ICHTH and its contributors.[3]

Prizes

[edit]

In 2013, the ICHTH established an Award to honor a scholar whose recent work (book or doctoral dissertation) has made a significant contribution to the fields of history and historiographical theory. In 2022, it joined with INTH (International Network for Theory of History) to hold a joint prize.[4]
