History

[edit]

Origin and formation

[edit]

Jafar Sandouk (vocals, guitar) formed the band with Adam Burnell (drums) early 2017 in Toronto, Ontario. Sandouk had moved to Canada the previous year from London, UK shortly after the UK referendum to leave the EU. Sandouk had songs written and recorded from his time in the UK and together they decided to release them as an EP while they worked on new songs and found a permanent bassist.

Howlin' Circus

[edit]

The first official release from Howlin' Circus was a selection of recordings that Jafar Sandouk had worked on between 2014-2016 in the UK prior to moving to Canada and officially forming the band with Adam Burnell. Although the recordings were not intended for official release, the two of them decided to release the recordings to help promote the band while they got to work on a full-length album and searched for a permanent bassist.

Run The Wrong Way

[edit]

In October 2017, Howlin' Circus (Jafar Sandouk and Adam Burnell) started pre-production on a full-length studio album. Jafar Sandouk had come to the studio with five songs written: Run The Wrong Way, Let Your Love Burn Out, Your Light Keeps On, Westbound and For You. By April 2018, at least six more songs were written. Sandouk and Burnell spent a few days in a church in Chatham-Kent, Ontario working through those songs and recording what they had at the time. A month later, Bryan Swartz joined the band on bass and they decided to re-work the songs together and get back in the studio to finish the album. Brian Moncarz was brought in to mix the finished tracks and Joao Carvalho mastered the album. The album Run The Wrong Way was released March 22, 2019.

The first single taken from the album was the title track Run The Wrong Way, released on November 22, 2018. At the single release show for Run The Wrong Way on December 13, 2018, the band handed out pre-rolled marijuana joints to audience members (Canada had legalized cannabis a few months earlier). The band performed the single on Global TV's Morning Show, airing on January 9, 2019.
