The Province of Costa Rica, also named Governing body of Costa Rica, was a administrative entity and territory of the Spanish Empire, created in 1573[1]
The first reference to the province of Costa Rica occurred in 1539, created by the Royal Audiencia of Panamá, which named Hernán Sánchez of Badajoz as governor. The provinces and appointments were deauthorised by the Spanish Empire, which in 1540 created the Province of new Cartago and Costa Rica, appointed to Diego Gutiérrez y Toledo as Governor. The province existed until 1573.
In 1812, with the Spanish Constitution of 1812 , trying to prevent the independence of the colonies of América, a proposal by the members of Nicaragua and Costa Rica in the Cortes de Cádiz, mediated a law for 23rd of may in 1812, se segrega del Reino de Guatemala, a los territorios de la Intendencia de León y de la Provincia de Costa Rica (que estaba bajo un gobierno militar dependiente de la Capitanía General de Guatemala, con las mismas facultades de una Intendencia pero con un rango menor, ya que en lo hacendario dependía de la intendencia de León), para reunirlos en una nueva circunscripción, la provincia de Nicaragua y Costa Rica.
After the independence wars of hispanoamerica and their decleration of independence, the province of Costa Rica went on to form, alongside the old Central American Spanish Provinces, the first Mexican Impire and, for a short time, the United Provinces of Central America.
