UC Berkeley has recently sought funding for a fellowship dedicated to Marlon Riggs for UC Berkley Journalism majors.[1]
In 2006, Riggs was awarded into the NLGJA LGBTQ Journalists Hall of Fame[2]
"Tongues Untied," held political backlash; Republican Senator Jesse Helms argued to defund the arts after its release.[3]
In 2019, The Brooklyn Academy of Music featured Marlon Riggs's work with a show of Race, Sex & Cinema: The World of Marlon Riggs.[4]
Riggs's poetry was inspired by friend, poet, and activist Essex Hemphill[5].
