[1]Frank Stewart who is a photographer born in Nashville, Tennessee. Born in 1949 He grew up in Memphis and Chicago. Stewart learned photography from Robert Sengstacke, who was a Chicago friend whose family owns Chicago Defender.[2] Attended The Art institute of Chicago where he received a Bachelors of Fine Art in Photography in New York from Cooper Union. Using his camera as an instrument, Frank Stewart has been around jazz and musicians for 50 years. He connected with jazz percussionists with the help of his step father, to name one the jazz pianist Phineas Newborn Junior. Who would bring him to concerts at New York clubs on 52nd Street and in Greenwich Village in the late 1950's.[3] His photography has taken him from Nashville, Memphis, Chicago and New York, places where he grew up, to New Orleans, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Havana, Liberia, Nigeria, Mali, Ivory Coast, Ghana. In 1963, he would travel to places with his mother, who was a model and dancer Dorothy Jean Lewis Stewart. He would continue photographing with the camera that he borrowed from his friends dad. In 1975 until 1988 Frank worked with artist Romare Bearden due to his passing. Stewart went on to photograph The Los Angeles Summer Olympics in 1984. Since 1993 Stewart has been the road manager and senior staff photographer for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, where Marsalis is managing and artistic director. The devastation of New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward by Hurricane Katrina in 2005; environmental damage along the Louisiana Coast from global warming and oil drilling; forest fire damage in Colorado and California.[4] Jazz photography was different; it was a way to document cats that never got documented,” Stewart told the Jazz and Lincoln Center blog in 2015. “You know, the cats that were on the periphery that you never see but needed to be documented because they were on the scene too. Some of them would be on the scene then all of a sudden they’d go back home because they couldn’t make it.
