Overview
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition of articular cartilage, to be distinguished from autoimmune inflammatory arthritides such as rheumatoid arthritis or seronegative spondyloarthopathies. Primary OA is idiopathic, though it is associated with age and genetic factors. Secondary osteoarthritis results from other conditions, such as mechanical derangement or malalignment of a joint or limb, joint trauma, infection, crystalline deposition diseases (e.g. gout or pseudogout), or metabolic disorders (e.g. hemochromatosis, Wilson disease).
