Adrian Woods Frazier II is a literary scholar and biographer. He was born in St. Louis Missouri 8 October 1949, and named after his grandfather, the founder of Frazier-Davis Construction Company. He attended St. Louis Country Day School (HS diploma, 1967), Pomona College (BA 1971), Trinity College Dublin (Diploma in Anglo-Irish Literature, 1973), and Washington University in St. Louis (MA and PhD, 1979). At Pomona College, he was the student of scholar and novelist Darcy O'Brien, and the director of his dissertation at Washington University was the poet Howard Nemerov. His dissertation was entitled 'Under Ben Bulben: Irish Poetry After Yeats.'
Frazier taught at Nanjing Teachers University in the People's Republic of China from 1979 to 1981. He prepared an anthology of the history of English literature for use in Jiangsu Province. In September 1981 he began teaching at Union College in upstate New York where his senior colleague was Willam M. Murphy, the biographer of the Yeats family. Murphy introduced Frazier to the archive of Annie Horniman, first owner of the Abbey Theatre. Frazier's Behind the Scenes: Yeats, Horniman, and The Abbey Theatre (1990) was one of the first volumes in Stephen Greenblatt's 'New Historicism' series with the University of California Press.
In 1993 Frazier was awarded a National Endowment of Humanities grant to assist in the research toward a biography of Irish writer George Moore (1852-1933), published in 2000 by Yale University Press to widespread acclaim.
In 2000 Frazier became the director of the MA in Drama and Theatre Studies at the National University of Ireland in Galway, the first of two post-graduate programmes he initiated at the University. The second, an MA in Writing, was underway from 2005.
In the first decade of the century, Frazier was a regular reviewer for the Irish Times under Books Editor Caroline Walsh.
In 2012 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Irish Academy.
