Controversy[edit]

Outsiders, including English people at the time, had a hard time understanding the purpose of Chopines. People did not agree with the fabric and texture in the chopines, many thought it is wasteful and undeserving. Most notably, this caused a divide between societal classes in Venetian times. Lastly, men were not pleased with the chopines at times, since women would appear taller than men. Overall, this fashion choice was debated a lot, and perceived as irrational by many.

Social Significance[edit]

Chopines were definitely a staple to determine one's social significance. Venetian chopines were typically worn by women who belong in upper-class families with more money. Furthermore, the women who wore higher-leveled chopines were placed around for publicly receiving attention. This attests to the notion the chopines were an authentic piece of art, representing the wealth, prosperity and beauty of Venice. In addition, women with high-leveled chopines had two servants next to them to help them walk, thus confirming the symbol of wealth and high-class.
