Wilhelm List (Vienna, 22 November 1840 – Vienna, 10 February 1918) was an Austrian painter and engraver.
List studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1885 to 1889, his teachers were Christian Griepenkerl and Franz Rumpler. He moved to Paris in 1894, where he became a student of William Adolphe Bouguereau and Léon Bonnat at the Julian Academy.
He went to Italy in 1895[1].
In 1898 he was one of the co-founders and members of the Vienna Secession, where he regularly displayed his works until 1905. He was also the editor of the Secession's magazine Ver Sacrum, where he also published his illustrations. In 1905 he left the Vienna Secession with Gustav Klimt, and he joined his new group Kunstchau, where he displayed his work until 1908.
Style and influences[edit]
Wilhelm List was a representative of Art Nouvau, which was called Sezessionstil in Austria. He is most famous for his graphic work, where he used typical Symbolist subjects, such as Salomè. His style was deeply influenced by Hodler and Klimt.[2]
