The Shakespearean Tragedy And The Shakespearean Comedy[edit]

A Shakespearean tragedy is a play which has violence, love and many flaws. The tragic heroes in the play need to have a big flaw which is their ultimate weakness. This weakness is usually exploited by the hero's enemy which results in the hero's downfall. The tragic hero is Shakespearean Tragedies needs to be wealthy and powerful as the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Below are examples of Shakespearean Tragedies:

  • Othello
  • Julius Caesar

A Shakespearean Comedy is a play which usually has mistaken identities and a clever servant. There is a struggle between the two or more lovers which separate and then reunite at the end. There is also family tensions which are solved towards the end of the play. Below are examples of Shakespearean Tragedies:

Shakespearean Language[edit]

Shakespeare created many phrases and words which are used in the modern world when speaking. He has done this by changing nouns into verbs and by connecting words which have never been used together before. He has added many prefixes and suffixes to different words to create new words. When creating plays Shakespeare created clever phrases which his characters have said. Some of the words and phrases he has added to today's vocabulary is listed below:

Elizabethan Era[edit]

The Elizabethan Era (1558–1603) was a time where theatre was very popular especially Shakespeare's works. The era lasts 1558-1603 because this is how long Queen Elizabeth lived for. The music and paintings were very popular during this time and there were even laws on clothes that only royal family members could wear. Royal family members were the only people who were allowed to wear the colour purple.

The Great Chain Of Being[edit]

In times of Shakespeare, people had believed of what is called "The Great Chain Of Being". It is the belief that everything in the world had its place which was chosen by a divine.

Divine Right Of Kings[edit]

The "Divine Right Of Kings" is the doctrine that the right to rule or the ability of be the king or queen is given to the person by God rather than the people.

Religion[edit]

During the Elizabethan Era, the Catholic church was outlawed and replaced by the Church of England which was Protestant. As there was alack of records, we do not know what Shakespeare practiced, but many assume he was Protestant as that was common during the era.
