Nusret Güner was born in Istanbul[1] in 1952. He joined the Navy in 1966 through Naval High School, graduated from Naval Academy in 1972 and was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1999. He became Admiral in 2011 and served as 45th. Commander of Turkish Fleet for 1,5 years. In 2013, he resigned from the Navy by his request.
Biography
[edit]He attended Naval Postgraduate School[2] in Monterey/ USA in 1976 and graduated with distinction in 1978 receiving his Master of Science degree in Physics. He also graduated from Naval War College[3] in 1986 and from Joint War College in 1996.
Between 1972-1999, he served at sea in various posts onboard warships including Commanding Officer of a LCT in 1975 and a Frigate in 1993-1994. He also commanded a group of six Frigates as Commodere in 1998.
During this period, he also served ashore as Instructor at the Naval Academy[4], as Head of the Weapon Repair Factory at the Shipyard in Istanbul, as Planning Officer and then as Chief of the Navy Operations Branch in Turkish General Staff and as Head of Operations Division at the Fleet Command.
Between 1988-1991, he served as Project Officer at Navy Branch, NATO Southern Europe Allied Forces Command in Naples[5]/Italy.
He was promoted to Rear Admiral (LH) in 1999 and became Plans Department Head at the Ministry of Defense for two years. He later assumed the commands of Northern Task Force which consisted of all Frigates based in Golcuk/ Kocaeli between 2001-2002 and of Southern Task Force which consisted of all Frigates based in Aksaz/ Marmaris between 2002-2003. While he was the Commander of Northern Task Force in 2001, he also commanded the warships from six Black Sea Littorial Nations for the first activation of Black Sea Naval Cooperation Task Group BLACKSEAFOR.
He was promoted to Rear Admiral (UH) in 2003, after which he was appointed as Head of Operations Division, Turkish Naval Forces Command[6] for two years. He later commanded the Surface Action Group which consists of all frigates of the Navy for two years.
Upon his promotion to Vice Admiral in 2007, he acted as the Deputy Commander of NATO Maritime Component Command, Naples/ Italy for two years and then as Chief of Staff, Turkish Naval Forces Command for one year and as Southern Sea Area Commander for one year.
Finally starting in August 2011 in which he was also promoted to the rank of Admiral, he has commanded the Turkish Fleet for 1.5 years. On January 29th, in 2013, he resigned from the Navy by his request, in order to protest the authorities who remained silent about the operations and dirty tricks aimed to discredit the Turkish Armed Forces especially the Turkish Navy which those were resulted as many naval officers who were mostly in high rank put in prison, however following year of his resignment, the Turkish Supreme Court reached the verdict that those officers were innocent.
