Hey Ash Whatcha Playin or HAWP is an irregularly updated video series focused on video games and gaming culture, utilising surreal humour. It centres around two adolescent siblings, Anthony and Ashly (Ash) Burch, living with their parents in Arizona, USA.

History[edit]

In an interview published in November 2010, Anthony Burch states that the first episode of HAWP was uploaded to Destructoid on May 29, 2008. He recalls that the first episodes were originally created as an excuse for him to learn to film with a new video camera he had bought. Because of this, many of the early videos are filmed without regulation of white balance, and are as such tinged yellow.

Ash and I got the idea for HAWP during the summer; our total lack of shit to do meant we could film an episode every week, and subsequently get the Destructoid community to acknowledge our presence through sheer force of quantity. It would have been easy for Destructoid to forget about us if we’d just filmed an episode every month, or something.

— Anthony Burch, [2]

Ashly Burch, in a 'virtual interview' published to YouTube in July 2009 by PowsoVidz, also commented on the origins of the show.

HAWP got started because I act about as insane on HAWP as I do around my brother in everyday life. So Anthony came up to me one day and said that he was just going to record me being as weird as I usually am, and put it on the Internet.

— Ashly Burch, [3]

Characters[edit]

Ashly[edit]

A somewhat immature character/ she will not pass up the opportunity to annoy her brother.

Anthony[edit]

Ashly's Brother whom is the prime target of her milk water gun shots.

Dad[edit]

Embodiment of mystery and evil. His presence in the series is comparatively minimal but his comedic timing makes a great addition to the pacing of the show.

Mom[edit]

Cameos[edit]

Format[edit]

A standard episode begins with Anthony approaching a gaming Ashly, and asking her what she's playing. Ashly states the name of the game they are reviewing/referencing in a voice imitating their mother, who is from Thailand. This average opening scene usually has no effect on the chronological order of events of the rest of the film, for example, in the episode Fable II, Anthony asks her what she's plaing in the opening sequence, but asks her again afterwards with a rephrased question.
