Ashtray

[edit]

Ashtray is a main character in the first and second season of the HBO television series Euphoria. [1] This character is portrayed by American actor Javon "Wanna" Walton, while the younger version of him is played by Daelo Jin Walton. [1] In the show, he is sometimes referred to as 'Ash'.

Biography

[edit]

Early Life

[edit]

There is little known about Ashtray's early life or family, as audiences learn in season 2 episode 1 of the show when baby Ashtray is left to Marie O'Neil (Kathrine Narducci) and her grandson Fezco (Angus Cloud) as collateral. Although Ashtray is supposed to be picked up by his mother later that night, she never returns, leaving the two to raise him as their own. [2] In the beginning, Fezco mainly takes care of Ashtray, despite him having a hard time adjusting to a sudden new life and new family. Slowly, he gets along with Fez and Marie, sleeping with Fez on the couch and eating Marie's cigarettes when she's not looking. [2] This leads to his long standing nickname, Ashtray. Marie and Fez are quick to treat Ashtray as one of their own, eventually teaching him about the family's drug dealing business at a young age. [1] Having to grow up very fast, Ashtray and Fez are left traumatized by their upbringing, leading a life defined by danger and violence.

Season One

[edit]

In the first season of the show, Ashtray is mainly portrayed alongside his brother Fez, participating in drugs deals in their family's convenient store. He is present during many of the drug deals that occur within the season between Fez and his clients, acting like a sidekick or assistant. When someone rats on the brothers to the police, Fez instructs Ashtray to flush all of their drugs down the toilet. [1] After Fez attempted to pay back Mouse, another drug dealer, for the drugs he had to flush down the toilet, Ashtray was fearful that Fezco could get hurt. He then attacked Mouse and his sidekick, Custer, with a hammer, fracturing Custer's nose and murdering Mouse in the process.

Season Two

[edit]

Ashtray is a much more prominent character within the second season. In the final episode of season 2, "All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name", Custer is working with the police attempting to incriminate Fezco by recording a conversation between them that will place him guilty of Mouse's murder.[1] When Custer's girlfriend, Faye (Chloe Cherry), tries to warn them that they are being recorded, Fez and Faye start denying any involvement in Mouse's murder. As the situation escalates, Ashtray grows more and more angry, leading to him impulsively stabbing Custer in the neck and murdering him. [3] Fezco, wanting to take the fall for his younger brother, punches Ashtray to make it appear as if he is innocent. Ashtray does not want his brother taking the blame, locking himself in the bathroom with a slew of weapons at the ready to take on the SWAT team.[3] While Fezco tries to urge him to come out, the SWAT team finally busts down the door. As they close in, Ashtray begins fire, accidentally hitting Fezco. As Fezco begs him to stop, he does so for a brief minute, causing the SWAT to open fire. It becomes quiet, and an officer approaches the door, where he discovers Ashtray on the bathroom floor. The cop, believing he is dead, turns around to alert the others. As Fezco watches, Ashtray gets his shotgun and shoots him, prompting the other cop down the hall to aim at Ashtray and shoot him in the head.[3] This scene was highly dramatic, and because Ashtray had no dialogue, it left fans wondering what his motive has behind acting so irrationally.

Relationships

[edit]

Ashtray and Fezco

[edit]

Ashtray is exclusively portrayed alongside Fez, making this the primary relationship for Ashtray in the show. [1] Ashtray and Fez have a very close relationship, having a sincere family-like bond. Despite being his little brother, Fez treats Ashtray with respect and maturity. They are also more than brothers, but business partners, participating in drug deals and meetings together. [4]

Personality

[edit]

Ashtray is very mature for his age, and thrives in high-risk situations. He is very energetic, and has a commanding presence whenever he walks into a room.[5] Ashtray likes to be in the middle of the action, often improvising in any given situation and acting on his feet. This can sometimes lead him to make poor, impulsive decisions due to his aggressive tendencies. Ashtray likes to live on the edge of danger and is never afraid to stir things up when he pleases. [5]

Physical Appearance

[edit]

Ashtray was a stocky, average-sized adolescent boy.[1] He has a brown buzz cut, a slit in his eyebrow, and his face was roundish. He has two tattoos under his eyes, one being a diamond, and the other being his initials, 'AT'. He has fair complexion and dark eyes, and wears a gold chain around his neck most of the time.[1]
