User:Al-Musta'rib

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I am a musta'rib, which is Arabic for 'someone who strives to become an arab'. Historically the word has been used for Arab christians in al-'Andalus (its bastard translation being Mozarab), but today it mainly designates either a non-Arab (for example a Berber or a Kurd) who tries to assimilate the Arabic language and culture, or what the French call an 'arabisant': an arabist, someone who studies Arabic language and history. I am neither Iberian nor Christian, but as a committed student of Arabic philology and philosophy I identify strongly with the word.
