Sheikh Zakariya Mosque
[edit]The Sheikh Zakariya Mosque is of three Friday mosques in the al-Daraj quarter of Gaza's Old City. It is built outside the Balashiyya Gate is the northwester part of the quarter. The mosque was built in 1057 according to an inscription there. Is is named after a medieval Muslim sheikh, Zakariya al-Tadmuri, who was buried there on the same date. Israeli archaelogist Moshe Sharon claims the mosque was probably built at a later date with the inscription confusing its date with Zakariya al-Tadmuri burial year.[1]
