The Commons
[edit]The Commons is a multipurpose facility at The University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus). The building was constructed as an addition to the existing UBCO Library, and opened in January 2019. The Commons connects to the Library through a hall on the first floor. The new building offers a diverse variety of teaching and learning spaces. It features modern classrooms, collaborative study areas and a digital technology centre.[1] The design of the building, strongly driven by student feedback,[2] is very futuristic and aims to encourage scholarly engagement and innovation.[3]
Features
[edit]Study space
[edit]The Commons offers teaching and learning spaces including a 450-seat lecture theatre, a visualization and media studio, and quiet study rooms. The lecture theatre is the largest existing classroom on campus, and 20% of seating is wheelchair accessible.[1] It is also the first lecture hall in Canada which can function as a collaborative teaching classroom.[2]
Quiet Study Spaces
[edit]Serwa Reading Room
[edit]Located on the ground floor of the Commons building, the Serwa Reading Room features natural light and a variety of seating options, including a treadmill and stationary bicycle desks.
North Reading Room
[edit]The North Reading Room is located on the third floor of the Commons, with a variety of high and low seating options and a quiet environment.[4]
Comma Cafe
[edit]The Comma is a cafe serving all-day breakfast and lunch within the Commons building. It offers a variety of goods including coffee, sandwiches, salads, soups and pastries. Ingredients are sourced from local food producers within the Okanagan.[5]
Graduate Commons
[edit]The third floor of the Commons building contains the Graduate Commons, dedicated specifically to graduate students. The Graduate Commons provides both private and group study spaces reserved for graduates, all illuminated by natural light. The space includes a printer, lockers, movable whiteboards, and two bookable meeting rooms.
