Aquanator

[edit]

The Aquanator is a proposed device using hydrofoils (an underwater version of airfoils) to generate electricity from water currents. 'Aquanator' is a trademark of Atlantis Resources Corporation Pte. Limited. The aquanator utilizes rows of sail-like aquafoils/hydrofoils to generate electricity from water currents. These devices can be compared to as underwater windmills. They turn silently and power an on-shore alternator. Unlike any hydroelectric/tidal power, the aquanator does not use any weir or dam to impede the flow of water (hence not disrupting any marine ecology) [1]. The aquanator was created by an Australian inventor named Michael Perry. The aquanator was developed in Maclean (located in Australia’s east coast). The aquanator has a very promising future since it can benefit the world by being another way of obtaining energy, it is cheaper than some of the current energy sources being used today, and is clean energy, making it environmentally friendly.

Energy

[edit]

The aquanator utilizes the current of either the ocean or a river to produce electricity. The aquanator is a green energy source because it uses renewable energy. The aquanator can generate energy even with a small current that is 1.5 knots [2]. Also as the flow of the current speed increases the energy yield will rise exponentially. For example it can produce seven kWh (kilowatt hours) from just a current of 2.5 knots and can produce up to 60 kWh from just five knots. The aquanator can produce up to 100 kW of energy [3]. The aquanator can produce up to one megawatt of electricity which is enough to power 660 households daily [4]. Since the aquanator is still in its prototype state. The aquanator can be very useful for remote islands since it can potentially power most of the island and disabling the use of other types of energy (i.e. diesel fuel).

Economy

[edit]

The aquanator can potentially benefit the economy. Since the aquanator is a type of renewable energy it can keep on using the same resources to produce energy. The aquanator is also cheaper than current diesel fuels. The aquanator can be very beneficial towards isolated islands that have to buy expensive diesel fuel for energy. The aquanator could potentially help these areas economy. It costs about the same amount as wind power and will be one sixth the price of diesel-powered systems [5].

Environment

[edit]

The aquanator’s design is meant for it to be a green energy source, meaning that it is environmentally friendly. Since the aquanator does not utilize any fence or dam, like other hydroelectric power, and instead uses sail-like aquafoils that rotate slowly so not to disrupt any life form in the ocean or river the aquanator is placed in. It also does not emit any gases that could potentially harm/pollute the environment. These two problems are usually the outcomes of trying to create energy, but the aquanator can help change that[6].
