The Wakey Wheeled Cats are a UK-based flat-track Roller Derby team from Wakefield, West Yorkshire
History and Formation
[edit]Based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, the Wakey Wheeled Cats (WWC) was established in late April 2009 by Kirsty Quinn (Fu-Quinn Hell) and Stephanie Sellers (Feline Fatale), and is managed and facilitated by the skaters with a DIY ethic.
The league held its public debut in the first ever Great Yorkshire Showdown, hosted by neighbouring league Leeds Roller Dolls in October 2010, where they reached the semi-finals.
The Cats have since played numerous away bouts and two home seasons, played from Huddersfield Sports Centre.
After using various training venues across the Wakefield district, the league began training exclusively at Lightwaves Leisure Centre in the city in January 2013.
The league has remained true to its DIY ethic and is ran by a committee, elected by members each year.
Wakey Wheeled Cats strives to promote positive relations throughout the roller derby community and regularly assists the local community and national charities through fundraising and events.
Past supported charities include W.O.L.F. (The Wakefield Oncology and Leukaemia Fund), the Haiti earthquake appeal, the Rosalie Ryrie Foundation and the Wakefield Express Caring Christmas Appeal.
Ethos, Progress and Current Situation
[edit]Wakey Wheeled Cats aims to provide athletic opportunities for women, with a view to compete on a national level whilst building individual competitive teams within the league. The league took a break from public competition in the summer of 2012 with the aim of building the league from the bottom up. 2013 will see the league retrace roller derby's routes by touring the Wakefield district with several intraleague bouts.
