Procedure of making an edit Request

[edit]

In Wikipedia pages are categorized as protected and semi-protected to avoid spam users to directly make an edit on any page but an editor can send a request for making an edit on any specific page. A new editor can do this by Clicking on "View Source" tab and then by Clicking on "Submit an Edit Request" button after this a page will appear where all the instruction are present with a text-editor is provided for proposing your edits and making your edit request.

What was the Hardest/confusing part

[edit]

Being an editor is difficult whenever we think of making an edit on any of the page most of our edits are invalid. For example:

  • Any facts suggested by you even it is true it won't be cited because of some reasons (like no source exists)
  • If your are new to editing you might have difficulty to deal with so many rules.
  • Providing any unreliable source (like Facebook or Reddit)

Changes and solutions

[edit]

The current process of making an edit request is a bit confusing and lengthy especially for beginners instead of "View Source" tab there can be simply a tab naming "Edit Request" with an text displaying on the top "This page is currently semi-protected so that only established, registered-users can edit it" and below it text editor is provided for making the edit request and below it all other information like "why this page is protected" or "what can I do ?" could be present with an improved UI. Thus making it more comprehensive.

We also have to design an automated process that allows the editors to make good edits with minimal human supervision and guidance. It also enables the new editors to make edits confidently without worrying about the rules.

Instead of providing various sets of rules for editing any page a better interface can developed that helps new editor to solve their issues like whenever a editor is making any straightforward changing an grammar, spelling or formatting the automation can itself verify it make the changes respective to it. Whenever an editor is providing any facts for any article from any source it should automatically be discarded if it does have any source or the provided facts has an unreliable source. It should also notify the editor of there error in alert box message.

This would be a more intuitive process and provides an easy transition into editing for the beginners by helping them to learn more and make good edits without reading the rules.

Personal experience

[edit]

Making an edit request is very simple and self-explanatory from my personal experience. The complete instructions are provided and is very helpful for new editors. but also dealing with so many rules and long process of making an edit request can be bit lethargic some newbies but it can be made interesting with little improvisation.
