Since the 1970's, the Communicative wave of planning knowledge has formed out of several key ideas. These key points include the notions that communication and reasoning come in diverse forms, knowledge is socially constructed, and people’s diverse interests and preferences are formed out of their social contexts. Communicative, argumentative or interpretive planning theory also recognizes that power relations exist that exist in practice have the ability to oppress and dominate individuals, and consensus-building can organize thoughts that move past traditional ways of knowing. Finally, communicative planning theory acknowledges that planning lies in everyday practice and social relations, bridging the gap between practice and context.
