California Mini Corps
[edit]Mini Corps (pronounced mi-ni cor-) is modeled after the Peace Corps and was designed to bridge the gap for students whose parents worked in agriculture and whose education suffered every time they moved.[1] Agricultural work is seasonal which means many families spend the year in different areas of the country depending on the crop ready to be worked. Families follows the crops because that is where there is work. These families are eligible to be a part of a program called Migrant Education. The Migrant Education Program offers students and families information and services on how they can help their children can improve their reading and language skills, as well as news about their local school district.[2]
Mini Corps Tutors are college students who come from a migrant background themselves. The tutors work with the migrant students in K-12 classrooms. They work to improve the student-teacher relationship of the migrant students and to provide teachers with the information necessary to better understand the experiences of migrant students inside and outside the classroom. [3]
College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP)
[edit]CAMP is a program in various state campuses and a few community colleges throughout California whose goal is to increase the graduation rate at the college level for first year college students from migrant backgrounds. They do this through support as well as services. [4]
