The Affrico is a tributary stream of Arno.

History

[edit]

The name “Affrico” comes from a poem by Boccaccio: “Il Ninfale Fiesolano”.

The shepherd Affrico meets Mensola, one of goddess Diana’s handmaids; after finding out about their love, the latter decides to turn both people into streams.

The Mensola stream, which is near the Affrico, gets its name from the same poem.

Course

[edit]

After going down for a few kilometers from Camerata hill, Affrico wets a part of the suburbs in Florence, towards Salviatino; the rest of the stream buries itself, since it is covered by road infrastructures. It rejoins the Arno river in Ponte di San Niccolò.
