Life and career

[edit]

Hull was born in Covington, Louisiana and grew up in Los Angeles following his mother's marriage to Tom Cosgrove, dry cleaning business owner, when he was six. He is the half brother of actress Miranda Cosgrove. Hull's biological father, Arthur Hull, was an alcoholic at the time of his birth. During his childhood and presently, Hull has had a strained relationship with his father, although he has since become a pastor, and refers to his stepfather as his "dad". He taught himself how to play the guitar after his his stepfather bought him one when he was 13. A year later, he was writing songs and performing with a friend who happened to play bass.

Feeling rather increasingly alienated at his high school, Hull became so frustrated that he spent his senior year studying at home. He also wrote and recorded his first full length album in 2004 during his last year of high school. At first, Hull wanted Manchester Orchestra to be a solo project, with guest appearances by his friends. "I was listening to a lot of Morrissey and the Smiths," he says. "So the city of Manchester really fascinated me, as did the idea of being the leader of an orchestra and having all my friends come in to play."

On December 29, 2005, Hull was involved in a car accident on Los Angeles' Pacific Coast Highway with close friend Drake Bell. Bell was driving when a truck ran a red light and caused a head-on collision. This resulted in a cracked skull and several facial lacerations. He had a 3-year relationship with actress Amanda Seyfried that ended in 2008.

Hull is also the song writer for the folk centered Right Away, Great Captain, and is Co-President of Manchester Orchestra's label Favorite Gentlemen.
